Privacy Policy

Couchmark is an app and website operated by Layer ICT B.V., a company registered in the Netherlands ("we", "us"). This policy explains what data we handle when you use the Couchmark iOS app and couchmark.com, and the rights you have. The short version: your watch history is yours, we don't sell data, and there are no ads.

What we store

• Account. You sign in with Apple, with Google, or with an email address and password. We store your email, a securely hashed password (never the password itself), and your profile: display name, username, bio, region and an optional profile photo. Signing in with Apple or Google tells us who you are and nothing else: we receive an identifier and, if you allow it, your email address. We never receive your Apple or Google password, and we cannot see anything else in those accounts.
• Your library. The shows and movies you track, their status, your ratings, watched episodes, and who you follow. This is the core of the app and syncs to your account so it follows you across devices.
• Community content. Emoji reactions, comments and replies you post on episodes, plus any photo or GIF you attach to a comment, shown to other Couchmark users together with your display name. You can delete your own comments at any time, and deleting your account erases all of them, attachments included.
• Shared comments (your choice per post). When you post an episode comment you can share it to CommsUni.tv, a comments board Couchmark shares with other TV tracker apps; the composer shows which way each post goes, and "Only on Couchmark" keeps it out entirely. A shared comment (its text, episode, timestamp and any attached image) is stored by CommsUni and shown in the other connected apps. You decide once whether your display name and profile photo travel with it or whether you appear there under an anonymous generated name, and you can stay anonymous. Couchmark identifies you to CommsUni only by an anonymous technical code; your email address never leaves Couchmark. Deleting a shared comment in Couchmark also deletes it from CommsUni, and so does deleting your account.
• Feature requests. Ideas you submit in the app's Help & Ideas section, your votes on ideas, and comments you leave on them, shown to other Couchmark users together with your display name. Idea titles, descriptions, statuses and vote counts also appear, without any name attached, on the public roadmap at couchmark.com/roadmap. You can delete your own ideas and comments at any time, and deleting your account erases all of them, including the votes you cast.
• Public leaderboard (opt-in). Only if you explicitly join, your name, avatar and episode counts appear on the public leaderboard and your profile becomes public. The weekly top 3 get a medal shown on their profile. You can leave the leaderboard at any time, and setting your profile to private removes you from it automatically.
• Integrations. If you connect Plex, Overseerr or Jellyseerr, we store the connection tokens encrypted and use them only to sync your watch activity and requests. We never browse or store your media files.
• Support and beta messages. If you contact us through the support form or sign up for the beta list, we keep your email address and message so we can reply and send you beta information. Problem reports sent from inside the app also carry your app version, your iOS version and, only if you attach one yourself, a screenshot; they are linked to your account and erased with it.
• Diagnostics. The app can send crash reports so we can fix bugs. These contain technical details about the error, not your library.
• App usage insights. The iPhone and iPad app can record how its screens are used, through Microsoft Clarity, so we can spot buttons that do not work and steps people get stuck on. Everything on screen is masked before it is recorded: your library, your comments and anything you type are never captured, only the shape of the screen and where you tapped or scrolled. Nothing is linked to your account, and you can switch it off under Profile, Settings, Share usage insights. The Android app does not include it.
• Website statistics. couchmark.com counts page views in aggregate: which page was viewed, which country the visit came from and which site referred it, added up per day. Clicks on App Store links are counted the same way (which page the click happened on, per day). The app similarly adds one anonymous count per country per day when it connects, so we can see where Couchmark is used. This counting uses no cookies, stores no IP addresses and holds no identifiers of any kind, so no view, click or count can be linked to a person. It runs on every visit, because there is nothing in it to consent to.
• Microsoft Clarity, only if you agree. On the marketing pages of couchmark.com we can use Microsoft Clarity to see which pages work and where visitors get stuck. It sets cookies and records how the page was used: mouse movement, clicks, scrolling and the pages visited. It loads only after you choose Accept in the cookie bar, never before, and choosing Decline keeps it off for good. You can change your mind at any time with the cookie settings link. Clarity does not run on the web app at couchmark.com/app, so a signed-in session with your library in it is never recorded there.

What we don't do

• We don't sell or rent your data to anyone.
• We don't show ads or share your data with advertisers.
• We don't put advertising or cross-site tracking cookies on this website. The only cookies that can appear are Microsoft Clarity's, and only after you accept them; decline and the site sets none at all. The web app stores a sign-in token on your own device, nothing more.

Third parties we rely on

• TMDB supplies artwork and metadata for shows and movies. Requests for posters go to TMDB's servers. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
• TheTVDB supplies additional series metadata: episode lists for anime and matching for TV Time imports. Metadata provided by TheTVDB.
• Cloudflare hosts our servers, database and file storage (including profile photos).
• Microsoft provides Clarity, the analytics described above, and receives the interactions it records: on the marketing pages of this website only after you accept, and from the iPhone and iPad app with every screen masked. Never from the web app, and never your library or anything you typed.
• CommsUni.tv hosts the shared comments board that connects Couchmark with other tracker apps, including the archived TV Time conversations it grew out of. Only comments you explicitly share are sent there, under an anonymous technical code (and your display name and photo only if you chose to show them).
• Apple handles Sign in with Apple, push notifications and TestFlight distribution under its own privacy terms.
• Google handles Sign in with Google under its own privacy terms, and distributes the Android app through Google Play. If you choose that sign-in, Google knows you have an account with us. If you would rather it did not, use an email address instead: every part of Couchmark works the same either way.

Your rights

You are in control of your data:

• Export. Request a full copy of your data from within the app, or email us.
• Delete. Profile → Settings → Delete Account permanently erases your account and all data: library, watch history, follows, connections, reactions, comments and comment attachments (comments you shared to CommsUni included), feature requests with their votes and comments, and problem reports with their screenshots. This cannot be undone.
• Correct. Edit your profile at any time in the app.

Under the GDPR you also have the right to object to processing and to lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).

Legal grounds (GDPR)

We process your data on these grounds:

• Performance of a contract for your account, library, sync and the integrations you connect yourself (Plex, Overseerr, Jellyseerr). Their connection tokens are stored encrypted and used only to perform the sync you asked for.
• Legitimate interest for crash diagnostics (kept no longer than 90 days) and abuse prevention such as rate limiting. Rate-limit checks use your IP address in memory only; we do not store IP addresses.
• Consent for optional things like push notifications, which you can revoke at any time in iOS Settings or in the app.

Data retention

We keep your data for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, everything is removed immediately. Support messages are kept only as long as needed to help you.
